By the Rivers of Brooklyn has been nominated for Best Atlantic Published Book in the Atlantic Book Awards, to be announced in Halifax on April 14. It’s kind of a strange award in that it celebrates the entire process of publishing the book and is in some ways more an award for the publisher than the author — they consider the design, the marketing, the whole package. And it can be any kind of book — which is why Brooklyn‘s two competitors are A Field Guide to Newfoundland Birds and A Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Dictionary. Can’t imagine how the judges will pick a winner amongst three such wildly dissimilar books.
But I’m thrilled to be on the shortlist, and this really is an appropriate award because having the right publisher has been such a big part of this book’s particular journey. I have no idea how things will turn out on the 14th but as they say at the Academy Awards, it’s an honour just to be nominated!
